Self-Care Sunday: 3 Easy DIY Gifts From the Heart

Some of my favorite DIY self-care gifts are also the sweetest little rituals to keep for yourself. They’re thoughtful, useful, beautiful—and they feel personal without needing to be complicated.

We are always celebrating something—birthdays, hostess moments, thank-yous, just-because days—and apparently Christmas too. They’re already putting up trees and playing holiday music, and we haven’t even made it through fall yet. So I pulled together three of my most-loved DIYs that are perfect for making ahead, gifting from the heart, or keeping for your own Self-Care Sunday.

Today we’re making: eucalyptus shower steamers, a cozy simmer-pot gift jar, and a simple magnesium body spray.

1. DIY Eucalyptus Shower Steamers

These little steamers turn an everyday shower into a beautiful pause. I love packaging them in a glass jar with a handwritten tag—they look elevated, but they’re surprisingly simple to make.

What you’ll need

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • ½ cup citric acid
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 12 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 6 drops lavender essential oil
  • Water in a fine-mist spray bottle
  • Silicone mold

How to make them

  1. Mix the baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch in a large bowl.
  2. Add the essential oils and mix very well so they are evenly dispersed.
  3. Mist the mixture lightly with water, mixing between sprays. Stop as soon as it holds together like damp sand—too much water will start the fizzing reaction early.
  4. Press firmly into silicone molds.
  5. Let dry for 24–48 hours, then store in an airtight jar away from moisture.

How to use

Place one steamer on the shower floor, away from the direct stream, where it can get gently splashed. This helps it dissolve more slowly.

Important: These are for adult shower use only—not bath bombs and not for direct skin contact. Use with ventilation, keep away from children and pets, and stop if the scent causes irritation, coughing, or discomfort. If you’re pregnant, nursing, or sensitive to fragrance, check with your healthcare professional before using essential oils.

Gift it: Add the steamers to a glass jar and tie on a tag that says, “Place one on the shower floor. Refresh. Relax. Reset.”

2. Cozy Fall Simmer-Pot Gift Jar

This one is basically cozy season in a jar. It makes such a pretty hostess gift, teacher gift, neighbor gift, or little “thinking of you” surprise—and it uses simple ingredients you may already have.

DIY fall simmer-pot gift jar recipe with fully dried orange, cinnamon, cloves and rosemary

What you’ll need

  • 3–4 fully dried orange slices
  • 2–3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 1–2 fully dried rosemary sprigs
  • Optional: 1–2 star anise
  • Clean, completely dry mason jar
  • Twine and a gift tag

How to assemble it

  1. Make sure every ingredient is completely dry. Any remaining moisture can encourage mold inside the sealed jar.
  2. Layer the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, rosemary, and optional star anise in the jar.
  3. Seal the jar, add twine and a handwritten instruction tag, and store it in a cool, dry place until gifting.

How to use

Pour the contents into a small pot, cover with water, and bring to a very gentle simmer on low. Add more water as needed.

Important: Never leave a simmering pot unattended or allow it to boil dry. Keep the hot pot out of reach of children and pets. Fragrance—even when it comes from real botanicals—may bother sensitive people or animals, so use good ventilation and discontinue if anyone seems uncomfortable.

Gift-tag wording: “Pour into a small pot, cover with water, and simmer on low. Add water as needed and never leave unattended.”

3. Simple Magnesium Body Spray

I love this as a simple evening ritual: a few quiet minutes to slow down, take a breath, and care for yourself. I’m keeping this version intentionally simple—just magnesium chloride flakes and distilled water—so there aren’t undispersed drops of essential oil floating in a water-based spray.

Simple DIY magnesium body spray recipe for a four-ounce glass bottle

What you’ll need

  • 2 tablespoons magnesium chloride flakes
  • ⅓ cup warm distilled water
  • 4-ounce glass spray bottle
  • Small funnel

How to make it

  1. Add the magnesium chloride flakes to the warm distilled water.
  2. Stir until the flakes are completely dissolved.
  3. Let the mixture cool, then pour it into the spray bottle using a funnel.
  4. Label and date the bottle. Shake before use.

How to use

Patch test first. Lightly spray the arms, legs, or feet, avoiding the face, eyes, broken skin, and freshly shaved skin. Magnesium sprays can tingle or sting, especially on sensitive skin, so rinse off and stop using if irritation occurs.

This is a personal-care ritual—not a treatment or a promise of better sleep, stress relief, or magnesium absorption. Because it is a homemade water-based product without a cosmetic preservative, make small batches, keep the bottle clean, and discard it if the color, clarity, or smell changes.

Gift it: Use an amber glass bottle with a simple label and add a little note: “A small ritual for a beautiful pause.”

Turn These DIY Self-Care Gifts Into a Gift-From-the-Heart Basket

If you want to make it extra special, bundle one or two of these DIYs with a soft hand towel, a pretty mug, a natural-bristle body brush, or a handwritten note. Use a small basket, wooden crate, or even a reusable tote instead of traditional gift wrap.

The beauty is in choosing something that fits the person—not filling a basket just to fill it. Thoughtful over excessive. Useful over clutter. That’s very Crunchy Boujee Living.

A Gentle Safety Reminder

Natural does not automatically mean safe for every person or pet. Always label homemade gifts with their full ingredients and directions. Essential oils can irritate the skin, eyes, or airways and can be dangerous if swallowed. Keep all ingredients and finished products securely away from children and animals, and choose an unscented gift for anyone with fragrance sensitivities.

DIY self-care gifts don’t need to be perfect or complicated to feel luxurious. Sometimes the most beautiful gift is simply knowing someone slowed down long enough to make something especially for you.

DIY Self-Care Gift FAQ

How far ahead can I make these gifts?

The dry simmer-pot jar can be assembled ahead as long as every botanical is completely dry and the jar stays sealed in a cool, dry place. Shower steamers should also be kept airtight and dry. For the preservative-free magnesium spray, I prefer making a small fresh batch close to gifting and labeling it with the date.

What if the recipient has pets or fragrance sensitivities?

Choose an unscented option when in doubt. Essential oils and strong botanical fragrances are not appropriate for every person or animal, so include ingredients and directions and let the recipient decide what works in their home.
